Lonely Planet Budapest City Guide

The Budapest travel guide by lonely planet is very bad. It has police stations and gas stations as "things to do." Too little historic info about sites. Unhelpful list of "attractions." The neighborhoods and recommendations are so generic. Stuff you can google yourself. 5 dollars isn't worth the garbage they offer.

Hey, what gives? You took a nice usable travel app and messed it up with stupid graphics and a screen wasting scrolling photo gallery. Give me back my detailed map and the ability to save favorite locations.

Downloaded this as a backup to my guidebook, but ended up using it just as often! The map is just so convenient, and it's absolutely essential to have an off-line map with store/restaurant hours/locations.

Imagine the depth and humor of Lonely Planet in your phone with a GPS enabled map. You can find a cheaper map, but you do get what you pay for in life. Stop dithering and buy this already.<br/>You won't learn nearly as much about the place you're visiting shortvof carrying the LP book.

I know that apps cost way less than books - but still, in my app world $5.99 is a significant investment. I had great expectations because of this and the fact that I've depended on LP book guides for almost 20 years for every trip I've ever taken. I was disappointed by this app as it does not provide many of the key things I expect from a LP guide. Judging by the number of good ratings this app gets, I guess not everyone needs the same info, surprisingly.<br/><br/>Cons<br/>1) Some sections are so basic that they're just not useful. This is probably the most annoying thing. Example a - the Language section doesn't actually have any Hungarian phrases in it, or anything else about the language other than an overly long passage about how in Hungarian the last name comes first. Example b - the &quot;Getting There and Away&quot; section provides no information how to get from the airport to the city (um, this is critical!), but rambles on about every airline big and small that flies into Budapest. By the time I buy a travel guide I already have my ticket so this is totally not useful information.<br/><br/>2) There are no recommendations for places to eat, stay, etc. Rather there is what appears to be an alphabetic laundry list of places you can scroll through, with very short descriptions.<br/><br/>3) You can only check places out by neighborhood - there is no search function. So if you hear of a cool place and you want to look up LP's review of it, if you don't know what neighborhood it's in it is very difficult to find. <br/><br/>4) I just have a sneaky suspicion that it's out of date. Many of the places I've found online that seem cool I can't find in the LP app - although if I could search all neighborhoods, maybe I would find it there.<br/><br/>5) The sections of the city seem to be called District 5, 6, 7, etc. But LP doesn't use these names or mention them.<br/><br/>6) In general I'm missing much of the context that the book gives you per section. It's like they've decided that 80% of the commentary should be removed for the app version. This is misguided.<br/><br/>Pros<br/>1) The offline map including sites and attractions is probably very useful.<br/><br/>2) Ability to look for attractions/museums/etc. by neighborhood is decent<br/><br/>Ideas (aside the obvious, mentioned above)<br/>1) Ability to add your own pins to the map for offline use would be very cool - and help LP keep up to date on cool new things.<br/><br/>2) Ability to &quot;create your own trip&quot; by adding an itinerary and pinning the points on the map so you can use it at a glance as you're walking around. (Or a functionality to hide all the pins except the ones you choose)<br/><br/>Overall, I'm going to look for another offline map option and Hungarian phrasebook. If I can find that I will try to return this app. Can you return apps? I guess I'll find out.

I am very dissapointed with this app. I have the actual book, and bought the app so I could leave the book home. Well, in the app you don't have recommendations for either hotels or restaurants, and you can't search for hotels or restaurants by neighborhood. All it allows you to do is open the map, click on a particular hotel or restaurant icon, and you get minimal info on it. What good is a travel guide that does not give you suggestions on the best places to eat or sleep when you travel???? It does have good info on tourist attractions and museums. Lonely Planet should be ashamed to put this app out, and charge $17.00 for it, when it's useless for what you need it most!!!
