Lonely Planet Amsterdam City Guide

Useless pretty much sums it up. Could have gotten more from a tourist brochure

I was exited that I would be able to use on the iPhone a guide book from such a renown source. I was quite disappointed with the implementation. The maps are unresponsive. It is next to impossible to see your current location and your destination on the same screen so that you can figure out how to walk there. In addition, there are options for the maps to show only a certain category of POI (such as attractions but not hotels or stores) but when you restart the application; it does not remember the options. Third strike against the app is that the search function does not seem to search everything, only certain portions of the guide.<br/><br/>This app needs some work before it is useful.

The information is decent, but the map part of the app goes crazy whenever you click the location button. As soon as you touch the map to resize it, it zooms wayyyyyyy in and it stops responding to your commands. Only way to fix it is to quit the app and restart. I wish i could get a refund, because now I have to look up a site on the lonely planet app, and then use another mapping program to navigate to it.

Disclaimer: I've been using the application on an 3G iPad mainly (less on the iPhone).<br/><br/>This application is good but not superb and there are some features that are not yet polished or missing.<br/>I'm facing continues problems with the maps there - usually I wanna find my location and nearby places to eat or see, so this feature works great but when I bring the location I've choose on the map and then try to see where I'm along side the location I'm headed its not always working, sometimes the pinch wouldn't zoom out (it always zoom in..) and there is no way to get direction.<br/><br/>Frankly, I don't understand why not simply enable me to open the location I just found in google maps - it sure does a much better job and the maps are much better.<br/><br/>So at the end I find myself coping the address to google maps and navigate from the google maps.<br/><br/>I would expect that since this is an application it would be more accurate, many places doesn't include opening hours and so you can find yourself going to a place just to find it closed.. <br/><br/>BTW Lonely Planet, you have a computer, you can add a filter for locations that are open now..<br/><br/>The application never remember the filters I gave it and every time I need to set them again and again.<br/><br/>Over all its a nice application that helps to get things done but for the price I would expect much more.<br/><br/>If someone from Lonely Planet reads this here are the main ideas I think you should implement:<br/>* In the location information I would have add the ability to open in google maps, add as bookmark in google maps and see community information (from Foursquare, Yelp or even from your own service).<br/>* Let me filter by things that are open now as well as my favorites only and please make the app remember my previous filter.<br/>* I would love to be able to see tram lines and directions (BTW implementing it with the Google Maps application would be even better for us and easier for you).<br/>* In Amsterdam you should have filter for Coffie-shops - its basic and required.<br/>* An iPad version would be great too..<br/><br/>Over all its OK but the bugs and more features should be added to justify the price.

This really needs to be fixed for the new UI. I feel like this was a total waste of money if I can't save favorites.

Bought this app for our 4-day stay in Amsterdam. Used it extensively. Overall, the app adds several really useful dimensions over the printed version of Lonely Planet guides. Those are: 1) offline map (you can use GPS to locate yourself on the map, without using data connection while abroad, 2) nearby sights/food/etc. 3) search mostly works, 4) ability to save places to favorites for later lookup. We rented bikes, and being able to quickly check where you are on the offline map proved invaluable. That feature alone is probably worth going to iPhone version vs printed. However, a few shortcomings are: 1) The app needs to remember the last state (ie, which filters were on/off, which place on the map was opened). It currently resets itself completely upon closing. The only way to remember anything is by using favorites. 2) Not all pages are filled in, it's clearly missing some printed text data. Some pages are simply blank. 3) Price. I know printed guides cost a lot more, but they are books that need to be printed. Overhead of iPhone app is very low. Please pass the savings on the consumer and offer the app for no more than $7.99. It is currently GROSSLY overpriced, considering abundance of free and cheaper options.

Great but needs map rotation to the direction you're facing using the digital compass in iPhone.
