Lonely Planet Rome City Guide

The map crashes all over the place. In particular when trying to set filters. Also, I live in Rome and have noticed that the map does not play well with the app in general. Some spots have the correct address listed, but when you ask to see it on the map, it takes you somewhere else, in some cases to the other side of town. One specifically, Il Gelato di San Crispino (according to the app itself possible the world's best gelato shop) has the correct address near the Trevi fountain, but on the map is way off, far outside the downtown area. Sad to think of all the poor tourists braving Rome's harrowing public transport for the world's best gelato, only to find a dingy laundromat. Buyer beware, double check locations before setting off on any adventures!

Just downloaded this app with plans of using it next week in Rome. The map is overwhelming with 'stuff' so the logical 'filter' button is there in the upper left corner. This button, probably the feature that makes the app so potentially useful, causes all menu options to disappear and forces a restart...which doesn't solve the problem. Disappointing when an app fails within 15 sec of trying it out! My sense is that all their apps have the same issue as this issue is interface related.

I bought this app for my new iPhone as we were visiting Rome for a day. We went on a self-guided tour to many of the main sites (well, as much as you can do in a day). I found the app very useful and well worth the relatively cheap price for the convenience of not having to lug around a book and the ability to load up maps quickly. I use a 3GS model (sim-free) and would have been roaming the Italian phone networks. I am told 3G works much better in Europe than the UK. All I can say is that the program was fast and maps loaded instantly. I have previously used a 3G model and it is noticeably slower loading apps and accessing the net so the "S" version may have helped. Before we went we browsed the "book" and loaded up favourites so we could see on a map where everything was and whether different places were realistically accessible in the time available. While I am sure one could always improve an app, and while you still cannot beat a book for generally rummaging through, as a tool that took up no physical space and provided plenty of information the app was faultless. Those travelling with us made me the unofficial guide and at each stop I just searched the name of the street/place and read out to everyone what the guide book had to say. It was very informative and just the right amount of detail. If you want more, you can always search the net yourself. Indeed, I thought the app so helpful that even though London is on my doorstep I've bought the version for the city so that I can check places out easily and educate myself better about its history.

The GPS enabled maps without having to have a data connection is nice but needs some work. When switching to this app, location services is often slow to update or doesn't update at all which necessitates killing the app and restarting.<br/>Also, you can filter attraction types (restaurants, sights, etc.) from the map overlay and you can add individual attractions to a list of favorites but there is no way to only display the favorites overlaid on the map.<br/>Finally, you can look up an individual attraction in the index and see its location on the map but there is no way to see your location on the map at the same time so you can see where you are relative to where you want to go or directions on how to get there.

There's inaccurate information in the Party Nights section. Towards the end. Gilberto Santa Rosa is from Puerto Rico not costa rica.

Great app

Warning don't buy this app not worth $3.99. Lonely Planet needs to pull this and revamp

Just went to Rome... Been a fan of Lonely Planet for years, but found this app to be relatively useless in Rome. GPS tracking did not work. Limited text on general information. Limited entries for restaurants. So, absolutely no benefit from this app. Better option is Rome2Go (cheaper and GPS works). For guide, nothing beats the ItalyGuide.IT apps series, especially the Vatican Museum one. Will stay away from Lonely Planet apps, but may still buy their books.
