Report an issueIt is 1965 and the US ground war in Vietnam is in full swing. As a US Army commander, wage a counter-insurgency (COIN) war to secure the Ia Drang valley, on the border with Cambodia.
In order to win the Hearts and Minds of the local population you will need to search for and destroy the Vietcong (VC) insurgents, who infiltrate from the Ho Chi Minh trail and destabilize the province by intimidating the locals, laying mines and ambushing your forces.
The insurgents also have a bigger brother, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). This well trained, conventional army have much wider ambitions than the VC, they want to take total control of the valley, a stepping stone to unifying North Vietnam with the South under communist rule.
The NVA conducts operations from across the border, primarily aimed at supporting the insurgency and launching offensives when the time is right.
To carry out your COIN mission, co-ordination of ground troops, special forces, artillery, mechanized units, training of local forces (ARVN) and airmobile assets is essential, but of greater consequence is winning the support of the local population. With greater co-operation from the local inhabitants comes the reward of intelligence, a key factor in COIN warfare.
The war is not fought in isolation, so as the commander of the US forces, you will have the added complexity of managing the support for the war back home, should you the lose the Hearts and Minds of the American people, the war will also be surely lost. This is a game that captures the true essence of the Vietnam War, where airmobile operations are paramount, fire support bases play a critical role and air strikes can save the day.
Rise through the ranks and watch your personalized uniform transform from a junior Lieutenant to General as you relive the Vietnam War.

8 of 15Passable overall, maybe even good until the enemy stages breathtaking recoveries when apparently on the ropes: volley fired RPGs appear from out of nowhere and-voila!-twenty turns of US gains are instantly erased. Wha?!?Lame, lame, lame. Losing is ok after a fair fight but this? C'mon fellas, i'll bet a weekend pass in Saigon that you can do better.
Trust me, I play this game EVERY DAY! But it needs cars (Jeeps and enemy vehicles) it also needs tunnels like in the real war. That’s why I left a star out, it needs more. EDIT: I added another star, Just because you guys did fantastic I expect more Updates. -8Bit_1984 (⌐■_■)
Good game but needs Syncing
Good game....scout Helos and/or LRRPs would make it better....
I normally don't write reviews, just rate with stars, but this is the first game since the original Civilization that has kept me up late at night with "just one more turn". While I often wish, especially when I am winning, that there was an option to extend an individual game my sleep schedule is happy for the 45 turn limit 😜. The game is a little short on depth of troop types, but that does fit the 45 turn limit and keeps it easy to learn. The random Ho Chi Minh trail and terrain at first upset me, but I have come to completely enjoy the replay value that it adds. The game does an excellent job conveying fog of war, as well as the challenges inherent in a counterinsurgency operation. Excellent job devs and Slitherine for publishing such a gem!
I love playing these types of games for fun but slitherine has aha bit of making great games but never making them bug crash free, around turn 7 or 8 my game crashes. I will not buy anything more from slitherine until this bug has been fixed
Great, innovative game, one of Slitherine's best. In the game you have to manage regular patrols to villages to gather intel and track down the elusive VC along with the creation of forward firebases stocked with artillery and gunships to pound Charlie when you find him. You also need to use your Green Berets to train up South Vietnamese forces who are better at getting intel from the villages. And there's the constant dance of managing your helicopter fleet to drop units in Landing zones, and to keep everyone in supply. It's a real challenge at first, but you begin to figure out what works, probably by your second game. It's a great look at counterinsurgency tactics, something that is rare enough in a strategy game. Regarding a couple of the criticisms in another review, I don't think they are valid. The appearance of the VC and NVA units is NOT entirely random. They pop up according to where they are moving on the Ho Chi Minh supply trail; your job is to analyze your encounters with the VC and anticipate where these units will be arriving. When you can do that, you will lay ambushes in wait, and have gunships hovering nearby to pound them when they appear. This is how you win the game. Also, the idea that patrolling villages makes them go over to the enemy side is wrong: sometimes when you enter a village the flag will change to indicate the other side controls it, but what this means is it happened while you were away, and you're just finding out about it now. Sometimes Charlie is in the villages when you're not, and you only learn about it when you go back. Anyway this is a very well executed and well thought-out design, and I recommend it to anyone who's interested in the Vietnam War era.
Please add POW missions and field medics a commando would be awesome sneaking behind enemy lines like Rambo and stuff
