Finally! My favorite NAV app

by F Troop Bulldog · July 24, 2012

I hated this app when it first rolled out as Garmin's initial effort to enter the iPhone/iPad app arena two years ago. It was buggy, glitchy, and didn't include expected features included on their other apps on other smartphone platforms or their standalone GPS units. But after massive enhancements and upgrades, this is by far my favorite NAV app and I am also pleased that Garmin has grandfathered us early adopters into this fully functional app without a monthly subscription. What I love about this app is that it gives you routes for a Car/Motorcycle AND pedestrian walking. I just came back from a trip to NYC and the pedestrian feature was priceless as it navigated your way to certain POI's, including where to access the subway, which line to take, etc. The pedestrian feature is not on Garmin's other app unless you get the 99¢ app with a monthly subscription. Another awesome feature is the integrated iPod/Music control so you can control all your MP3's within the app instead of switching to the Music app. This is another feature that distinguishes it from Garmin's other app. All the expected features are included: Change car icon Change Voice Turn by turn direction with street names Weather Auto Map Zoom Landscape mode Day/night backlight Route optimization Detours Avoidances Traffic Speed Limit Alerts Via Points Itineraries Home Setting Favorites Arrival Time Lane/Exit Assistance Map Updates 3D Maps Map Layers to turn on/off POI's, Wikipedia integration, Public Transportation, etc. It even has social media integration to check into places via Facebook or, my favorite, FourSquare. Another feature I like is that it doesn't store gigabytes of map data on your phone so the app takes up minimal space. It downloads your route/map each time fresh from Garmin's servers. Despite being on Verizon which prohibits voice and data connections at the same time, GPS navigation will continue while on a call or if you enter a cellular dead zone as long as the route was started prior to the call and/or dead zone. Just don't make any NAV changes while on a call and/or dead zone (i.e. subway) until after the call is finished or you're back in a data zone. It's awesome how the GPS will continue without data access once the route is started...even with turn by turn voice directions. For those wanting the dashboard view available on the standalone GPS which shows odometer readings, trips, etc., this app doesn't have it but is available in one of Garmin's other apps. But this app offers so much more! Enhancements I'd like to see in a future update: A speed limit warning that only beeps once or twice. I normally drive a little over the speed limit so I turn the warning off since the constant beeping is annoying. But I'd like to hear a beep once or twice to alert me of a speed limit change. A button on each menu that takes you directly back to the Map View so I don't have to keep pressing the back button over and over to get back to the map view while driving. Gasoline price lookup/sorting Thanks Garmin for updating this app and finally making it my favorite NAV app available!

Misleading -- it's an "onDemand" app even though it's not called that.

by emmby · August 15, 2012

Like many others, I too thought that the $60 version of the $0.99 StreetPilot onDemand app would include maps. The app description has since been modified to make this more clear, but it's still an easy mistake to make. Be aware that this is NOT the case. You MUST have internet access to use this app, EVEN THOUGH this app is not called "onDemand". If you do not have internet access, you cannot route nor can you download maps. This may seem obvious, but it's a severe limitation if you travel to places with so-so 3G coverage. In addition, on TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS the app has been unable to contact the Garmin license servers to validate my subscription, and I've been completely unable to use the app. Other internet has worked fine, just the Garmin app was broken, implying that the license servers were down. The app remained broken for the entire day, and I wasn't able to use it until the next day. Because of these issues, this $60 app seems just unreliable enough to make it worthless. It usually works, but if it's going to fail it's going to fail right when you need it. I really don't understand why Garmin is selling this next to the $0.99 StreetPilot onDemand when there's no distinguishable difference in their functionality.

Frustrating!!

by kpro11 · July 15, 2012

I cannot express how much I hate this app! It takes forever to route a destination, so I often have to wait in parking lots for it to start working. The app also shuts down frequently for no apparent reason (other than an impending turn, maybe). It has left me stranded on multiple occasions because it either refuses to work or because it takes so long. I purchased this app because I loved my Garmin unit which had stopped working after 3 years of daily use. What a waste of money!

started out great

at first when I got this app, it worked fine. loved how it got updates, so that I could always have the newest info. lately it's been laggy as heck, taking way too long to load directions, places, and roads. FIX THE APP!

One and a half years in use

by Blacksan · April 14, 2012

This is the only app/gps that I consistently use for all my travels. I gave my original Garmin to my wife because hers broke. Back then this app only cost $39.99 and I would pay the current cost of $59.99 if Garmin tells me to. I travel all over the United States' major cities to one traffic light towns and this little app got me to my destinations. The new versions of this App is superior to the Nuvi version. I laugh when my wife Garmin GPS can't find a Resturant while my does. So what is missing? The ability to control Pandora and other Music Apps.

Poor Direction When You Really Need It

by Who Called? · June 7, 2012

This application absolutely failed to provide direction in a downtown location. Arriving in a strange city, you expect a GPS to help you get out. I did have good 3G coverage at the time. Removed it and purchased a free standing GPS. Apple won't consider a refund, and Garmin said they won't either.

Buggy as heck

by robinmaypanpan · August 25, 2012

When I first bought this app, I loved it, as the turn by turn directions it provides are awesome! However, as time has gone on, it has gotten buggier and buggier. When I turn it on, I have to wonder if it is even going to work, or if it is going to crash yet again. It crashes constantly on my iPhone 4, often at startup, but also in the middle of routes. This app needs some serious debugging before it is up to snuff. Ugh. I'll be using one of the competitors apps as soon as I have a minute to find a good one.

Good but burns up my iPhone

by Meechbee · August 21, 2012

I like this but for some reason it makes my iPhone 4s burn up. Big battery drain (I don't blame this on the app) but makes the phone run really hot in temperature. Really hot.
