I MiSS BLOCKSWORLD
Blocksworld is a game about building and programming worlds, models, and minigames. The building interface is made easy to use, simply drag blocks into the world and scripts into a block’s Action Panel. Players start with some blocks and grow their collection as they get coins and spend them. The scripting is block-based, akin to Scratch and other coding education tools. Once you’ve finished your world, you can publish it to the community. Add a title, description, and assign categories. Don’t forget to take an Action Snapshot! Once you publish the world, it will be sent into moderation, where moderators (both players and Linden admins) decide whether it’s appropriate for Blocksworld (the game is rated 4+, after all). You can make changes and update the world later, but make sure it’s in a working state at publication. Blocksworld has a publishing cooldown, the subject of many, many complaints. When you publish a world, a 24-hour timer is put on the publish button for every world. The timer can be bypassed by spending a number of coins (50 coins by default, then -1 coin for every half hour that has passed). Updates are also subject to cooldown, though updating a world during moderation is free. The intent of this feature is not for the developers to make extra money, but to discourage players from publishing “low-effort worlds.” Usually, these kinds of worlds are intended for a specific other player to see and read (message worlds). Blocksworld is not a social network. Use some other means to contact those other people. Besides, if you’re actually able to create multiple quality worlds within 24 hours, you must have a lot of time to build. The game offers you millions of community worlds to play. Some are good, and some are not-so-good. You can browse “What’s Hot” (worlds rated highly by players), new worlds, the “Arcade” (this section is basically just obsolete worlds that were once popular), or filter by category, as well as search for worlds with specific keywords in the title, description, or builder’s username. Coins are the primary currency of Blocksworld, and what’s cool about them is that you can redeem 5000 coins for $10 USD (I’m not sure what the exchange rate is in other countries). Blocksworld is the only iOS game that allows this. They can also be spent in-game on blocks, player-made models (more on those soon), or block sets. Coins are earned through daily bonuses, getting high ratings on worlds, achievement badges, or selling copies of your models. Additionally, coins can be purchased for real money, if you want to. Selling models is probably the most reliable method of earning coins. A model is a group of blocks connected together that represent one object in a world. At any time while building a world, you can save a model by double-tapping any block in the model (to select the whole model), then tapping “Save” near the top-right corner of the screen. Leave the world and go to “My Models.” Select the model you want to sell. After that, the process is quite similar to publishing a world. Set a category and give it a price. You may want to lock your model, which means the buyer can’t edit or resell it. Then put it up for sale! Models can be purchased in the Shop under the “Models” tab. The other major complaint Blocksworld usually gets is about the Premium Subscriptions. Previously, there was a one-time purchase that included select blocks at infinite scarcity (you can place as many as you want), as well as discounts on all blocks and models. Now, there are monthly and yearly subscriptions (3 tiers, Basic, Better, and Best) that offer sets of infinite blocks, as well as reduced publication cooldowns, shop discounts, and extra daily coin stipends. The concern people had was that their purchase that they already made (of the original set) would be removed, though that’s all false. Overall, Blocksworld is an interesting game that you can build games in. Though it has some things in it that some players believe are detrimental for the game, the intention of their inclusion was to make the game better, even if they backfired a bit. I’d recommend that you try out Blocksworld and see how you like it, instead of going off of other reviewers.
