Report an issueThe Zones of Regulation® (www.zonesofregulation.com) is a framework for thinking as well as a curriculum geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their behaviors, including the management of their emotions and level of alertness. This, in turn, leads to increased self-control and problem solving abilities.

Introducing the Zones Picture Studio! Team up and learn emotional awareness by taking pictures with your device. Scenarios are presented to students providing them the opportunity to reflect on how the scenario would make their body feel. Thinking about the cues from their body and brain, students use the app to capture what the feeling looks like on them, gaining insights on the physiological cues that accompany emotions. All pictures will be taken with your device's camera, stored on your device, and displayed directly in the app for easy review. Students can even create their own scenarios. The Zones Picture Studio offers hours upon hours of fun and education.
Leah Kuypers is the author of the book, The Zones of Regulation (2011, Social Thinking Publishing). The Zones of Regulation was featured as a promising practice in Attention Magazine and is being implemented school wide in districts across the United States and Canada.
The Zones assists students in conceptualizing how they are feeling by creating a system to categorize their emotions and levels of alertness into one of four zones. Using a cognitive behavior approach, the App's learning activities are designed to help students recognize when they are in different zones, with each of the four zones represented by a different color.
The Zones is designed to be used with elementary students, secondary students, and adults.
Throughout the App, students learn how to use strategies or tools to manage their feelings and behaviors in each zone. Given each student's needs and preferences are unique, students explore various calming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports, building a toolbox of methods to use to regulate and move between zones.
However, self-regulation takes a lot more than knowing about tools. To deepen students' understanding of how to self-regulate, the App also explores how triggers or different events can impact how they are feeling.
The App highlights how to read others' facial expressions and recognize a broader range of emotions and perspectives about how others see and react to their behavior, insight into events that trigger their different zones, and when and how to use tools and problem solving skills to change the way they are thinking and feeling.
The App provides a fun, and engaging experience while learning and gaining valuable knowledge to assist in developing real-life skills. Students will be taken on an adventure throughout a town filled with excitement, rewards, and mini games.
To enhance learning, it is recommended that an adult closely monitor the student's progression through the App, asking probing questions and facilitating discussions about how the App's content can be generalized to the student's real life. The content of the App can be further explored using the lessons and learning activities featured in the curriculum book, The Zones of Regulation.

8 of 25I had either this game or one similar years ago. I purchased this to work with students who struggle with regulation. They were disappointed that they could basically just run in circles. Once they got to the “Stop, Opt, Go” I thought there would be more things for them to do. This game is similar to 2 Zones of Regulation lessons. I was hoping for more.
I appreciate the effort on this app, but based on the screenshots was expecting more tools. The book had dozens of tools, but as far as I can tell, the app only references three. Would prefer less 3d gameplay and more focus on tools.
Very poorly done, not worth to price. Very disappointed in the quality.
My 9 year old son has been playing this game every day for a week. He's in a class that just began discussing The Zones of Regulation, so this app is a great teaching and reinforcing tool. He was disappointed that after two days of playing he had played the entire game and bought everything possible at the store. But he continues to play by deleting and adding new players. He seems to like the repetition. I would have given it 4 or 5 stars if a player could have gone through the colored zones more than one time.
This app includes a character controlled by the user running around into different "zones". Once in the zone, the user reads a quiz like question around that zone such as, "Which feeling is not in the green zone, sad, frustrated, content." Kids need to be able to read the prompts. My issue is not so much with the reading requirement but with the app's lack of responsive teaching. If I got it wrong, how come?? A reinforcer for readers, but only in the short term.
In this app^ I can’t get past stop, opt, and go level. Can someone tell me how to do the rest?
For perspective, I am a special educator (SLPA) and mom to a child on the spectrum. This is not Minecraft or Angry Birds, so it's probably not fair to expect it to be an app kids will gravitate to on their own, although they might if they haven't been sucked in to the app video game world yet. That's ok- I see it as a therapy tool to be used, adult and child together, or with close supervision. (I do agree with another reviewer's request for audio narration- this could be useful for setting up a station where one student could be working on this app to enhance what was previously learned while the therapist is working one on one with another student.) I think this is a super resource to pull out and revisit with students who need help identifying and managing their emotions. I use it with my own son from time to time- the new content is very useful-kids can practice which emotions match up with blue, green, yellow or red zones, as well as practice breathing strategies for calming down. There is also a new section, the "picture studio", where the child can add photos of their own demonstrating different emotions. (there is a bug on my iPad mini running an older iOS version so maybe others will be fine, but I can't use the "take photos" option (it crashes) so the child has to take the picture outside of the app and then use the photo library option instead. Five stars if not for the two caveats mentioned. Definitely a great resource to have at its current price of $6!
I have been using this app both with my clients as well as with my own children. It is really engaging and even my own typical developing kids want play it on on their own. I have loved the discussions it has prompted and how it has held the attention of some very challenging clients. They want to continue exploring and playing the games. It has been fun too to play with small groups. I would recommend for therapists, as well as every parent to teach social and emotional regulation skills.
