This is my first time using the app and it made me download another app I didn't even need. Then I could get it to work at the kiosk.

Poorly written app. Asks you to plug your device into a kiosk - never do this - or connect to a random and untrusted Wi-Fi network. Not just a hassle but insecure. No reason it couldnt work over cellular or Bluetooth.
