8 of 15This review is for the Apple TV version of this game. I purchased it via the App Store on that device with the hopes of playing an old-school RPG on that device. Unfortunately, the app will NOT load. I have tried re-installing, updating software, resetting the device and the. Re-installing and....nothing. I purchased this specifically to play on the big screen. Feeling somewhat robbed of $8 ATM. All I got was a title card with a skull which, when I click on, brings me back to the home-screen. #broken
When you get to the 2nd story, every single time you try to get back on the boat and leave either the tower or the cave the game will crash immediately. It is impossible to finish this part of the story because of it. Fix this 1 bug and I’ll remove 5/5.
Great RPG in the era of FF and DW get on it.
worth the $0.99 4 chapters all fun
It WAAASSSS working for the 4th gen ipod but NOW they are to good for us 4th gen ipod owners. I really love this game, and i still want to play it, but did you have to take it away from us?
Any well done retro rpg/jrpg has my attention. This is one of them. Absolutely love it you can beat it in 8 bit then 16! Edit: my game crashes when trying to sell my iron sword. I am trying to buy a gold sword. Edit: game is gone from the App Store so I changed to 1 star why remove it? Luckily I have it installed but still.
Dragon Fantasy is a charming ode to Japanese RPG classics like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy (from which it clearly derives its name). The delightful sprite based graphics harken back to the SNES and so does the gameplay. Like the classics it is inspired by, while you explore the Word Map battles are random (but at a bearable frequency) and you see the cute and cartoonish monsters in first person as you trade attacks and magic spells (like Dragon Quest). In dungeons however you see the enemies before you fight them and touching their sprite initiates combat, not unlike Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest or Super Mario RPG, which is welcome update. The monster designs are adorable and the descriptions of attacks are sometimes hilarious ("Mrs. Rock Monster screams about the dishes!"). There's a good challenge here, but nothing too frustrating. Your stats will Level Up automatically and you'll learn new spells, but its up to you to buy and equip your own weapons and armor with the hard earned gold you looted, in true RPG fashion. The story revolves around a semi retired former dragon slayer named Ogden whose glory days seem mostly behind him, and a captured prince nobody seems to think Ogden can really save. Its a welcome and unusual departure from convention to play a middle-aged hero rather than a plucky teen or young adult. It brings to mind some classic action heros like John McClane. More cleverly though, Ogden's age would seem to mirror the target audience, who may have played the classic JRPGs that Dragon Fantasy mimics in their youth, and now recall those old adventures with nostalgia - just like Ogden. The story isn't a farce but it doesn't take itself too seriously either. It's well written and light-hearted and theres a journal to keep track of things if you've been away a while. There's also a bestiary, achievements, and an optional digital d-pad if you prefer to feel like you're using a classic controller. The bottom of your phone becomes a mini map as you explore. These modern conventions make this game frankly more enjoyable to play than the old games would be if they were more faithfully rendered. All in all what we have here is a video game with a lot of heart. There's no in-app purchases, there's no ads, it's just a great game that does exactly what it sets out to do: it's nostalgic, and it's fun. If you enjoyed playing RPGs on the NES or SNES or you like retro style games, Dragon Fantasy is well worth the price.
This has been my favorite indie RPG on the App Store since it arrived. Inspired by the original Dragon Warrior (U.S.), Dragon Fantasy packs 4 adventures, each with a decent amount of play time. Now, DF packs original graphics and updated graphics as well as original music and updated music. I would love to see this app get the Portrait mode that the second installment has. Love the Nintendo DS like look to it! Thanks for the love given to these games.
