Raw and relatable

Devout is one of the most honest, courageous, and emotionally impactful memoirs I’ve read.

As someone who also grew up Mormon and has spent years healing from my own experiences with the religion, this book hit me on a deeply personal level. I felt anger, grief, heartbreak, and at times I was completely triggered, but in a way that reminded me how far I’ve come in my own healing. David’s story brought back memories of living with constant shame and guilt, questioning every thought, doubting myself, and being taught to fear or distrust those outside the Church. Those beliefs don’t simply disappear when you leave; they can take years of intentional healing and therapy to unravel.

What moved me most was David’s courage. He wasn’t afraid to ask difficult questions, even when the answers challenged everything he had been taught. Choosing authenticity over certainty takes incredible strength, and I have so much respect for the way he shared his journey with such honesty and vulnerability.

Living in Utah, I’ve seen the heartbreaking reality many LGBTQ members and former members face. Too many people feel they have to choose between belonging and being themselves. David’s story shines a light on that pain while offering something equally important: hope. Hope that it’s possible to build a life rooted in self-acceptance, even after years of believing you had to earn love or suppress who you are.

Whether you’re Mormon, ex-Mormon, questioning your faith, part of the LGBTQ community, or simply someone trying to understand the intersection of faith and identity, this book has something meaningful to offer. It isn’t an attack on religion, it is a deeply human story about faith, identity, love, and finding the courage to live truthfully.

Thank you, David, for telling your story. I have no doubt it will help countless people feel less alone.

Falling in love again…

The narration is top notch! Full of action and unexpected developments! Love the character base. The only thing I would change is to remove the constant “GD’s” from Carl’s mouth. It’s totally unnecessary and distracting.
