FileMaker Go for iPad

Reading the fine print is always a good thing and I didn't. The requirement for owning a full featured Filemaker version should be more prominent. Oh well...I'll buy the full version at some point to begin using databases on the iPAD and iMAC. Looks like a great software program. I don't have the time to learn a new program right now.

Below are the instructions on how to share a file created on a Mac with an iPad. If one is connected to a Mac on a home WiFi network, the sharing is great; however, if you are using a remote WiFi network, files will not open. I guess one must follow the below instructions which are very difficult for me to complete. I don't need to share if both my iPad and my Mac are within site of each other.<br/><br/>Good programs make file share much easier.<br/><br/>1. Transfer Source.fp7 to FileMaker Go.<br/>2. Open Target.fp7 in FileMaker Pro.<br/>3. Create an “Import to Remote” script in Target.fp7. For example: Set Variable[$FilePath;Value:Get(DocumentsPath) &amp; “Source.fp7”]<br/>Import Records[No dialog; “$FilePath”; Add; Mac Roman] where the path to the source file on the device is file:$FilePath<br/>4. In the Edit Script dialog box, select the Import Records script step and select Specify import order. If the source fields do not appear in the Import Field Mapping dialog, select Specify data source, and add<br/>another path to Source.fp7 to the path list. For example:<br/>file:$FilePath file:Source.fp7<br/>5. Open Target.fp7 remotely in FileMaker Go. 6. Run the script &quot;Import to Remote.&quot;<br/>Using Target.fp7 in FileMaker Go, you have added data from Source.fp7 on the device to Target.fp7 on the host computer.

As a piano technician, I am on the road all the time. With this app, I am able to have with me at all times, my complete customer and prospect database. I have at my fingertips, a complete service history for every piano I work on. This app has made me so much more productive and effective for my customers. Needless to say, my business has grown dramatically. Thanks!

Last update was a big improvement on multitasking support. Not sure why it always seems to refresh open file when coming back to app, but at least it no longer asks for the password again. If it weren't for this delay or refresh time I would have given it 5 stars. <br/><br/>A database is something you tend to leave open and come back to it as necessary. But filemaker go seems to take too long to refresh or redisplay the open file. (all of my databases are opened through a networked filmmaker server)<br/><br/>A small problem. If you have developers gestures turned on (4 finger swipe acts like choosing the next app from task bar) and &quot;swipe&quot; to the next app, when returning to filemaker go, all open files have to be re-opened (and re-enter passwords).

FileMaker Go for iPad is one of my two or three most used and most appreciated apps. If you use FileMaker Pro databases and an iPad, you may find this app invaluable. I do.<br/><br/>Couple points that people need to know. <br/><br/>First, Go is strictly &quot;client&quot; software. It will let you open and use FileMaker Pro databases. &quot;Use&quot; here means, create records, enter and edit data, run scripts and reports. Filemaker Go does not let you create databases from scratch, write scripts, edit layouts, change permissions, etc. It's sort of a browser for FileMaker databases, not a programming/development tool.<br/><br/>Second, FileMaker go for iPad is different from FileMaker Pro for iPhone — and somewhat dangerously, both will run an an iPad. Be sure you get the right version!<br/><br/>Third, the databases you access with FileMaker Go can be more or less anywhere: on your iPad, on a computer in your office (and accessed via wifi), or on a server configured for remote access (so you can get to the database on your cellular-data enabled iPad while you sit in an airport or city park).<br/><br/>Fourth and final, while databases do indeed &quot;just work&quot; in FileMaker Go, using Go to access a database that was designed for desktop use may not be a pleasant experience. It's just like going to a web site on your smart phone when the site has not been optimized for mobile access. A good database design for FileMaker Go must take into account the smaller size of the iPad screen, must minimize use of menus (most of which are not available in Go) and must consider the challenges of working on a touch screen.<br/><br/>But when you have a Go-optimized database and an iPad, you really can take your data anywhere. It is a remarkable piece of technology.

Sort of useless as a serious app without syncing. Hard to believe it can't.
