Capable console, and getting better

by ZylVatar · December 19, 2012

Luminair is unique in its field. It has plenty of capability to control medium sized dmx lighting systems: a club, theatre, outdoor stage, or installations. I use it for live shows, including cabaret, dance, and music (rock type lighting). I have a rig with an array of modern lights, movers, color changers, intelligents. It needs a better way to quickly group/ungroup fixtures. Stacks playback mode is also a little tricky to transition to for some types of live show (dance or ambient shows are OK with its behavior). But the developers are constantly working these things out, and they are kind and responsive. This means alot in todays world of "write an app one day, gone the next." Ah, one more: I am patiently waiting for there to be submasters included. When i need that behavior, and position palettes, i tend to go for Enttecs Dpro instead. Soon, Luminaire? You absolutely get what you pay for

Most iPad apps are fun or frivolous. But this app is a tool. And an exceptional one at that. If you need to program lighting with mobility, there is nothing better. I personally use this on film sets all the time, and as efficiency is king, this tool has saved us hours.

Almost no tutorial content

When I got this up and running, was shocked to see that I can't create faders for groups as well as discrete zones of lights together in the same project. When I do, I get conflicts. Software doesn't seem to want to lock on to my Enttec ODE with unicast enabled.

Has bugs

by MerrilM · June 1, 2014

I have been using it for some time now and have experienced some terrible bugs. For example with the autosave feature enabled the app crashed after creating several fixtures and many scenes. Upon reopening the app none of my work was saved and I had to recreate everything. I began closing the project frequently to force a save and continued using the app, but most recently discovered that a program with 181 scenes that I rely on for gigs would not open due to some kind of iCloud issue. IMO the app should be designed to backup to sync with iCloud, but not rely on it for operation. I have not been able to use that program since have may have lost many hours of programming. On top of this, the app is missing some features needed to make it work well for live light operation and complex fixtures. Support has been responsive, however, so there is still hope for new features in the future and a fix for the iCloud problem.

A portable lighting console

This is an incredible app. This is the reason I bought an iPad. With an artnet node from enttec and a wifi router my ipad can be used as a wireless touch screen lighting console. This app has the ability to program any of the 512 channels in any configuration I want. I can set up cues and edit them later. and I can create cue lists called stacks that have multiple playback options. The app is similar to Luminair for the iPhone but it has a few more features. The wider screen of the iPad allows for more tracks or faders and it allows for better control options from x/y faders and color changers. Also allowing for tracks and cues to be on the same screen. It is very easy to learn. I just showed it to a dance teacher who has had no training in running or programing lights and after a few minutes was able to get the basics. After an hour she was programing and running the show while having fun doing it. The price might look expensive but if you work with stage lights then even if have to buy an ipad, this app, an artnet node, and a wifi router it is still the cheapest way to get a wireless fully functional lighting console anywhere. I know of some RFU's that have less functionality than this set up that cost way more.

Good, but not perfect.

Needs a feature to "link" faders in groups. (Can link one set of faders with "master") overall very good. Crashes my iPad 2 sometimes when playing too aggressively. I will update my review when I actually learn how to fully use the app. Need a place to download pre-made light shows for your fixtures to speed up the process.

This is the best dmx app on the market. It got me to quit using my chamsys mq200 dimmer board. Only thing that could be better would be the ability to control more than one universe simultaneously.
