The Jim and Frank Mysteries – The Blood River Files HD

I agree with the reviewer (Carrie) who said that a puzzle adventure game should be fairly relaxing. This one is not. If you look at the screenshots, you'll see that the first one shows a dense mass of flowers. That's a segment within the game where you have to hurry and find eight 5-petaled flowers before time runs out. That game at least had a puzzle element to it in that the 5-petaled flowers are in the same place each time you restart, so you can eventually finally find them all even if you're less nimble. The segment that caused me to take the time to give this game a low rating is one where you have to shoot 50 bats out of the sky in 60 seconds. Each shot takes about 2 seconds before you can reload, so you'd better hit 2 or more bats with every shot. The controls are awkward, my wrist hurts from trying it over and over, I'm still stuck on it, and there's no way to skip the arcade sequence. This game would be 5 stars if you could: 1. skip any arcade sequences (possibly paying a small amount of the apparently worthless gold nuggets you keep collecting), 2. completely skip long dialogue sequences. I can think of several ways they could implement dialogue skipping. I'd welcome any solution where I don't have to click click click through "Hey, Jim, you know what?" Click for next message. "What, Frank?" Click for next message. "I'm hungry." etc. 3. skip all of the monotonous walking from place to place. There's a 5-star puzzle game in here, buried under a mountain of filler. I'd rather have a great, tight little puzzle game that I could play and enjoy for 10 hours than this game, where I enjoy 10 hours of puzzles, tolerate 10 hours of walking around and "funny" dialogue, and unhappily have to "tough out" 3 more hours of arcade stuff.

This is a lovely find. It's like spending a long afternoon with the best Highlights magazine ever. Great for kids!

Some puzzles, such as finding flower petals and bat hunt, are frustrating and irritating because the controls are so imprecise . It's not a question of skill, it's luck Be warned - these can't be skipped, there are no eurekas for these. As for the rest, the story line is thin and seems targeted to teens.

If you like prof Layton and think this game may be interesting for you, stop. The puzzles in this game are badly phrased, and test your ability to guess what they are asking, rather than solving the puzzle. Great graphics, terrible puzzles.

This game claims to have 20 hours of gameplay, but in reality has at the most 6...and that is only because of all the inane dialogue! Some of the directions are poorly written and leave the player a bit confused as to what to do! Much of the game's animation was choppy, which was odd considering that not much was going on.

...you'll like this, because it's pretty much the same gameplay, same basic story progression, and same details down to the coin collecting and puzzle pieces. Gave it only 4 stars only because the art could be better, but the puzzles are fun - again, a lot of them are the same concepts as the Prof Layton puzzles.

Much like the Professor Layton series, the puzzles are reasonable, tho a little easy. Nice graphics. Definitely recommend if you liked Layton.
