Discovering Jazz Guitar

A practical introduction to jazz guitar — without getting lost in theory (or in your own fingers). Understand jazz chords and progressions with step-by-step lessons inspired by jazz standards, from Classic Jazz to Brazilian and Gypsy Jazz.

This course is designed for beginners in jazz: you’ll learn real concepts and how to use them. It’s not a “first guitar” course though — you should already be comfortable with basic chords and basic rhythm (changing chords in time).

What’s inside:

8 lessons with a gradual increase in difficulty. For each lesson: theory, tips, tabs, and video. Learn chord embellishments, diatonic substitution, and tritone substitution. Understand how to create your own jazz chord progressions.

Lesson 1 — Jazz Chords

Jazz chords built from the major scale. II–V–I chord changes in G and C. Introduction to walking bass.

Lesson 2 — II–V–I Progression

Using the major scale in progressions. Chord embellishment. The diminished chord.

Lesson 3 — Changing Key

Find II–V–I in multiple keys. Chord roots on the E and A strings.

Lesson 4 — More Chord Movement

Diatonic substitution. Secondary dominants. Cycle of fifths. Triads and tetrads.

Lesson 5 — Tritone Substitution

Tritone substitution in context. 11th and 13th chords. Practical fingerings.

Lesson 6 — Blues for Clara

From a traditional 12-bar blues to a richer form. 9th and 13th chords.

Lesson 7 — Gypsy Swing

Gypsy Jazz rhythm fundamentals. Major and minor 6th chords.

Lesson 8 — Sunny Bossa

Bossa Nova rhythm pattern. Using substitutions to color progressions.

This app doesn't work with iOS 5.0 so I've never seen it work!!!!!

Horrible

by Drew669999661234 · November 26, 2013

Ok, the functionality of this app is horrible it doesn't explain how to use it or where these 8 lessons are, and even as you figure it out there are other glitches such as the videos not downloading and the tablature that you can "follow along" with is blocked by the volume control... I want some updates or better yet a refund

Great Learning Tool!

This program is a great tool for those who have some familiarity with the jazz idiom.

I love this app. I am teaching myself jazz guitar and have found it very useful. I think the explanations are clear and concise. Plus they give you tab and video demonstrations. I wish they had more jazz lessons and an iPad version. Excellent app!
