I do the same thing with my slr, but this is a lot easier. The results aren't quite as good... But I don't have to mess with settings and put up the tripod. The results are pretty good for the little effort I put in to them.

Awesome app

Aim your phone at a VERY DARK or black scene with small moving lights. Like distant traffic, a moving candle, a small flashlight, or even someone's cell phone screen. The lights will streak--the cool "light painting" effect you see in ads sometimes. Really simple to use and experiment with what works. (Note: I had to set the light setting to highest, even in a very dim room. That should probably be the default. You really can't use this without darkness anyway--which only makes sense. Also: don't aim a full size flashlight or headlights right at the phone: those are way TOO bright. And one final tip: the brighter the scene/lights, the faster you should go; make the shot just a couple seconds long unless you have total darkness and a light that's not too bright to "paint" with.) The low ratings must be from people who don't even know what light painting is, and just download anything on sale 
