Choice of Variants is Great

by dale2b123 · December 15, 2014

Marxist, Dunsanays, etc are wonderful. A few bugs where the AI crashes in a won situation. But pick a different move and win anyway. Wishing for IPad & PC versions. ! This app is that good!!

Fun to play with friends, computer has some problems

by MrNickJones · April 27, 2012

The computer tends to take forever to make its moves when the auto-difficulty setting is on. Additionally, as a previous reviewer stated, the game tends to crash when the ai finds itself in a bad position. That being said, this is a great app to play with friends. Would recommend a "create your own variant" feature

Bughouse

It would be great if the creators put in the bughouse variant on the next update or two

Learning a lot from the variants

by MarkHarrisonX · April 3, 2010

If you've seen any of Josh's other apps, you know he has a good eye for detail and does a good job on app "fit and finish." You won't be surprised to learn that this chess app has the nice feel and smooth response you would expect. I've been enjoying playing the variants, which in addition to being interesting in their own right, often are set up so that you can get a lot of practice with a particular piece or set of pieces. The undo function is nicely done and unobtrusive. It's handy for when you fat-finger a piece into the wrong space of course, but also for taking back blunders where you would otherwise resign. The recommended/possible moves are nicely done.

Crashes

The knight move is fixed but now the game crashes when ever the duffuculy is higher then 1.

Variants are worth it

by kromato4 · June 8, 2010

The variants are what differentiates this chess app from all the others on the app store and I found them great fun (especially when playing solo against computer). I really like the Peasants' Revolt variant (4 knights vs 8 pawns). It's a fun way to explore the relative strength of pieces. Upside down chess is nuts for the number of queens that end up on the board at once. App has nice level of polish and with the 1.1 update is quite stable (played on gen 1 iphone and ipad). An ipad version would be nice, but scaled up version scales surprisingly well.

Crashes a lot

Game crashes too much otherwise would be good. Overall not worth the money. Don't spend 2 dollars on an app that mostly crashes.

Wow what a waste of time

This is the worst app I have purchased. Glitchy, buggy, and crappy. AI takes absolutely forever to make a move on anything but easy. Maharaja variant is excruciatingly stupid. Please do not be suckered in to purchasing this app. I wouldn't download it again if they gave me 1.99. Get another chess app trust me you will be glad you did.
