Excellent and accessible chess game

by Scott_GSD · February 20, 2011

Marcel has done an excellent job in making this chess game accessible. You have read a number of comments from other blind individuals who tell you how great this app is and they are all correct. Marcel took an app that was virtually inaccessible and made it fully accessible within weeks. He did this as an independent developer. Marcel is a model that other developers both independent and from large organizations should mimic. I received no compensation for my comments, but I believe Marcel deserves recognition for being the first developer to make an accessible chess and checkers games on the iOS platform. Thank you Marcel

My Only suggestion: Provide Explanations for the Exercises!

by Geekster2 · February 20, 2011

Chess-Wise goes above and beyond for teaching! Nothing I've seen lets you download and replay all the master's tournaments and world championship games, back from the year 1851, up through today! Great idea! And the opening book, and the EXERCISES: All great for teaching. It deserves the name "Chess-Wise", because it makes the user just that! My ONE request would be to provide explanations for the exercises. Are they One-move to mate, Two-moves to mate, next best move? Whatever it is, anyone can muck around until they get the move right, but do we understand WHY it's the correct move? It would be nice to see an explanation pop up after getting it right, completely explaining WHY it was right, and the subsequent moves to mate.

Best app for online play

by RNMRSMV · March 30, 2013

One of the best apps to play as a registered user on the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS). This app unlike any I have tested, maintains your connection for the entire duration of the online game play, however long. Obviously, if your wifi or cellular connection is spotty, no app can maintain the connection. Plus, it even saves all the FICS games you play in the local database, which enables you to replay the games and even analyze them; A great tool for self-improvement. The interface is very intuitive and free of clutter.

Chess-Wise Pro

Great implementation. Fully featured, miles ahead of the competition. Most of these chess apps focus on the engine strength, I guess it is a way for the developers to measure up against the competition. In reality I find that most of these chess playing apps can quickly slaughter the players that are most likely to download and use these apps. Where I find that Chess-Wise excels is the inclusion of features that will actually help the average (below average?) players that are the likely market for these apps improve the quality of their game and ultimately their enjoyment of chess. These features include, but are not limited to, access to 1000's of games in databases and online for replay and analysis. There is a tactics exercise module, positional setup ability for analysis, etc. All in all a first rate product at a unbelievably reasonable cost.

Move over, Shredder!

by chessgodzilla · April 29, 2011

There are lots of excellent chess apps in the app store, but this one stands out in many ways. My previous favorite was Shredder, which is an excellent app. However, I prefer playing chess 960 (Fischer random chess) to regular chess, and Shredder doesn't support it. Nor does Fritz, Hiarcs, or tChess. I was exploring the settings menu on this app, when I noticed an on/off toggle for (you guessed it) chess 960! This is awesome! And as if that wasn't enough, this app comes with 300 exercises, a gigantic games database, an endgame database, and is dirt cheap to boot! What are you airing for? Click BUY now! The programmer is also responsible for the outstanding checkers-wise app, which blows an other checkers app out of the water. Seriously, this guy deserves an award or something. Or at least the measly price of the apps. Oh, and did I mention that both apps have accessibility features for the visually impaired? (Thankfully not relevant to me.) Clearly, these apps are labors of love, and author deserves our support.

Ok. FICs is better. Got disconnected though and resumed game had a messed up board. Please fix this. Also need features similar to pocketgrandmaster...such as being able to resume games...etc.. This app could be sooooo much better.
