Bit Map is an offline map viewer for your own topographic or specialised maps in a variety of image formats including, PNG, JPEG, OZF2 / OZFX3 (non-RC4). Store multiple maps on your iPhone or iPad, and switch between them.

With Bit Map, you can view your own choice of maps, instead of generic maps chosen by somebody else, making it ideal for specialist maps with details not available on other mapping applications, such as highly detailed topographic maps obtained from your government mapping authority, or your own scanned in paper maps.

Your topographic maps can also be viewed while offline with no cellphone or wifi network access, making it ideal for a wide range of outdoor pursuits including bushwalking, hiking, treking, camping, cycling, touring.

Bit Map can use OZF2 and OZFX3 (non-RC4) map images as well as many common bitmapped (raster) image file formats, including JPEG, PNG, TIFF or GIFF. It can display large maps, and can even join several consecutive large maps into a single huge topographic map. The map size is limited only by the iOS device's storage and memory capacity.

Some basic navigation features are also included, such as dynamically showing your current location on the map as well as recording and display of waypoints and routes. Waypoints and routes can be imported and exported as KML files which can be used in some desktop applications.

WARNING: No maps are included with Bit Map, so you will need to provide your own maps. You will also need to understand how to prepare your map images for use with Bit Map. Read the Bit Map Files Acquisition Guide (linked to from the Bit Map home page) to understand how to prepare map image files for Bit Map before purchasing.

NB: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

To install apps directly onto this device, it must be jailbroken with AppSync installed.

Great potential for field scientists

There are several good programs out there for displaying topographic maps, but this is the only one that allows you to display whatever image you want, limited only by your own ability to project them in UTM coordinate system. Need to take a geologic map, satellite imagery, air photo, map of vegetation zones into the field with you? just save them in UTM and upload them to your phone or ipad. Then, you will be accurately located on the base map/image of your choice. You can then record tracks and waypoints, etc. Because you use your own base materials, you need some knowledge of map projections and have a program on your desktop to convert your maps/images into the correct format, so this program is not for the uninitiated. This program works great on my 3G iPad, and programs like this, as they develop, will turn the iPad into a spectacular field computer. There are still some things on my wish list: bearing, distance, and area calculations; explicit use of the iPhone/iPad magnetic compass, easy display of lat-long coordinates of any point on the displayed map, not just the current location; ability to draw contacts or boundaries on the map without having to walk them and create a track; layers, which would give the ability to overlay two different types of maps (e.g., topographic and geologic) and adjust the opacity of the top map; read in shape files, geotiffs in any projection (not just UTM); etc. But, this is a great start.

Great and useful map if you want to use OZI maps. Calibration is a bit tricky but results are awesome :)

At long last...exactly what we've been needing. Fantastic software!

At long last, finally a simple, easy to use, solution for people who want to make and navigate around their own maps. My team and I just finished using your software on a 1 week long forestry survey in northern Laos. We were able to make our own maps and use them in the field on our iPads. The software worked flawlessly and we were very impressed. I didn't even need to turn my Garmin on during the whole survey. The only recommendation I would ask is to make it possible to add .shp files from arc GIS. That would really take things to the next level. Thanks for creating BitMap. -G

Good for importing your own maps

by DaddyPilot · October 4, 2010

This is the first app I've found that lets you import your own map images then overlay your routes and current position on them. It does this well and it's great not being limited to Google or open-source maps anymore. For example, I can now use my Joint Operation Graphics on my iPod touch. I can even geo-reference my Terminal Procedures too. The procedure for importing maps is a bit awkward but it works and the instructions help out. I would give Bit Maps a higher rating (and pay more) if it gave me a true "touch" interface for importing maps; for example dragging a few pins representing known points onto the map image to calculate the geo-reference or dragging the map image over a grid to position it. Overall, Bit Maps is a great value at only $2 and I will be using it a lot, especially after I get my new iPad.

Bit map is no good

I purchased this app thinking that I could download the USGS maps and have A GPS moving map. Not the case. the USGS map are Adobe files and will not work. this app is no good and a waste of money.

Great app, an OziExplrer for IOS :)
