Pictures: A - High quality pictures. But sometimes can get a little ambiguous (i.e. not sure what the picture is referring to... but you get the hang of it after 1 round) Sound: A - Good quality sound. Game: A+ I found this to be very effective. There's 3 different pictures and you have to match the sound the picture. Very good to go against different pictures. Word List: B+ Good basic words that are high frequency. But there's a few obscure categories (i.e. Fairy Tales - Sorry, not really interested in what "Witch" means in Spanish), but rest of the words were very useful. Create FlashCards: A+ By far the best feature of this application. Creating this takes some time and effort, but I've already found this to be extremely useful. Great execution and great job. Intuitive, effective, and fun to use. A bargain for what you're getting.
My favorite apps of all. Most fun when you do at least two different languages. Children love it. So do adults. Before you know it, you know 100 words in eight languages, and it's still fun. Gengo flashcards alone make the purchase of an iPod / iPhone worthwhile.
I was looking for a flash card application to which vocabulary I was assigned in a class could be added. Although Gengo Flashcards advertises this feature it is very slow, buggy, and poorly designed. During the time I added two words, the application crashed once and my iPhone completely hung once and had to be rebooted. Pictures seem to be required for each new word as well. Since I don't want to go out and find a photo for each vocabulary word I add, this seems fairly limiting. In their ad, the publisher carefully avoids saying how many vocabulary words are included. At this writing there are about 250. Far too few to be useful, but perhaps they planned to sell me more from their associated (and separately billed) web-site. I found iFlipr, a generalized flash card program for the iPhone with a huge library of free, user contributed card decks, to be much more useful for my purposes. With it one can generate Spanish flash cards with the correct character set at the rate of about 3-8 a minute. The only thing I miss is an audible pronunciation for each word. While this can be added with iFlipr, it is much more time consuming. Bottom line is that this Gengo scores high on concept but falls down in implementation - too few supplied vocabulary words and too buggy. More a toy than a useful tool.
It seems to be a very fun application to help increase one's Spanish vocabulary; however, when I try to add pictures with new words, it crashes frequently. That part is frustrating!
