WordBook English Dictionary & Thesaurus

I’ve used this app since the iPod days. It’s not just my favorite dictionary app, it’s my favorite app! :)

Having a dictionary/thesaurus on hand all of the time finds a surprising amount of opportunities for use. I always have it at hand in conjunction with reading old British, science, psychological, philosophical, or most any literature. While playing crossword type games on my phone, it helps when I come across a word I don’t know/haven’t considered. And there are actually regular occurrences while conversing/writing when you want to know the definition of a word; often times I know the concept/idea of a word and when it applies to certain conversations, but I don’t necessarily don’t know what the word means exactly. And I think a thesaurus is one’s greatest resource while doing any form or creative writing; even if you’re not a full blown author, I use it plenty for emails, social media captions, letter writing, and journaling. Although their thesaurus could definitely be more expansive. It doesn’t offer many different uses for words, for example it will only offer 1 or 2 definitions for a word when it might have many more so the synonyms are rather limited. So if you’re primarily using for the thesaurus, I’d recommend a different app.<br/>Having a dictionary in your pocket is just great for anyone who likes to add a little bit of learning to their day. What I love about WordBook specifically is that it adds the entire dictionary to your phone. You don’t need to be connected to cellular data/WiFi to access it. I’m a flight attendant and have my phone on airplane mode constantly; and often times airlines charge for WiFi, or simply don’t have it, so having it directly on your phone is extremely useful. I could see it also coming in handy for anyone who works/spends a lot of their time outdoors and away from cellular service. I certainly like to read while camping. The interface is simple to use, and I like the bookmarking system because there are many words that I come across that I would like to be more knowledgeable of so that I can use them more regularly in my own exchanges.

This is the best dictionary with thesaurus on the market. Let this be the end to your scouting and searching for what you need. Almost a decade later since I first got it... it’s still here.

This is a good general dictionary. My main complaint is that it has no landscape mode for an iPad. It would also be better if it had a way to remember word searches. It would also benefit by having an external search option for words it does not contain: e.g. “chyron”.

Plus there are audio bites on word pronunciation. Was considering “upgrade” to Oxford dictionary but it’s expensive and free version was a joke. Luv my WordBook, have this app parked next to Kindle app

My review disappeared.<br/>Has recently developed a problem, when using pronunciation feature it mutes the volume.

I have used WordBook for years and it is quick, reliable, and useful. Is it the OED? No, but it is helpful when I need a word, can't spell a word, or don't understand the precise meaning of a word. It gets the job done.

I really like this dictionary. It is simple and easy to find words. The definitions are simple which is usually all I need. If I need something more in-depth on rare occasion, I can go to a different app. It also helps with pronunciations. It’s everything I need in a nutshell.
