Starmap is the complete reference for everyone who observes the real night sky — built by a professional astronomer, and given freely.

No ads. No subscriptions. No in-app purchases. No tracking. Simply the most catalogue-complete star atlas ever published for iPhone.

• Millions of stars, 88 constellations, and the full Messier, NGC, IC and Caldwell catalogues • Specialist catalogues no other app carries: Sharpless, van den Bergh, Lynds, Barnard, Abell clusters • Live solar physics from NOAA — sunspots, flares, X-ray flux, Kp index and aurora forecasts • 9,900 named lunar features, with their origins and etymologies • Live comets, asteroids and trans-Neptunian objects from the Minor Planet Center • Deep-sky detail enriched on demand from SIMBAD, searchable by any catalogue identifier • A true optics workflow: define your telescope and eyepieces, see real field of view, Telrad rings and reticles • A dark-adapted red night-vision mode, made for use at the eyepiece

Point your phone at the sky to identify anything above you, or plan the night before you step outside. Rise, transit and set times for every object, sent straight to your calendar.

A reference work, not a toy. Free, because that is what it should be.

Not worth

Unless you buy the PRO version you will only access a ridiculously low amount of objects. At the same or lower price than the standard version you can afford better designed Apps containing extended catalogues such as Star Walk, Star Chart, Skykey to mention some.

Wonderful App

by Love The Drummer · May 3, 2012

I do believe this is the best app I have purchased. Fast and very useful with the 4S. Follows your movements well and very easy to use. Also this App is perfect and one step below a companion working professional App for an astronomer. Each upgrade has improved the quality by leaps.

5 Stars

Well worth the money. Beautiful graphics, tons of information, lots of settings controls to customize what info you want displayed. Best astronomy app out there. I also have Sky Walk. I think Starmap is slightly better, although Sky Walk is prettier

Crashes for ios7.0.6

After upgrade to iOS 7 apps crashes or freezes to the point that it crashed my iPhone. No upgrades. Makes it useless to me.

The app is crap!

by redleg53 · June 9, 2015

Oh it's worse than just half a screen! The last update wiped out most of the app's features. I can't find anything. Looks like they're selling me back the features that used to be part of the app. I call foul. This used to be a very good and educational app. Now the app is crap!

Good app for Basic+ Stargazing

Easy to use with many different features and a good astronomical catalogue (350,000 objects). I haven't needed to try any other apps because this works more than well enough on both iPhone and iPad.

Very beautiful, realistic, discovery and learning tool

This is the most beautiful app I've ever used. You hold up your device, and it shows you what stars you are pointing at (if you point at the ground, it shows you what's on the other side of the earth). The representation of the night sky is absolutely lovely and fascinating, and very realistic. You can turn on or off drawings and illustrative overlays of the constellations, which are also simply and beautifully done. The app uses the device to detect your changed position and adjusts the sky accordingly - so you can use it to locate something familiar, and then go from there to find out what the other stars and constellations around it are. Additional features are in-depth screens with details and images, many features to turn on and off the potentially very high detail level of viewing, and even a "flashlight" feature, rather useful if you are using it outside at night to learn the real sky. The UI is smooth and very intuitive. You can just start to use it, you don't have to learn it. I have several friends with this app and the ones who don't have it often ask if I'll turn it on and show them what's in the sky at the moment. I initially quailed at the cost because so many apps are free or so much less, but it is far less cost than a book containing the same static information that you have to sit and learn by turning pages. This is a tool, not a book, and the amount of work and education and design that went into it is extraordinary. The only thing I wish it had that it doesn't is asterisms, that amateurs like me could use more easily to orient themselves outside at night. The Big and Small Dippers, for instance, are not delineated in the app. I highly recommend it.

Very nice

My first attempt at astronomy, to help finding objects for my daughter's new telescope. So far I love the app, very intuitive, and tons of information available in the app.
